Advocacy Days in the Capitol – March 15 - 17
Join fellow FPA members from around Florida March 15 – 17 in Tallahassee for the semi-annual Advocacy Days in the Capitol. This is your opportunity to make a difference on how your profession is viewed and regulated by our state government. The spring trip gives FPA members the opportunity to interact directly with those responsible for creating and enforcing laws that affect the lives of our clients and businesses on a daily basis. FPA of Florida will be partnering with the Foundation for Financial Planning to conduct a public relations campaign with various Veterans Affairs departments. Come be a part of this milestone event and share the good work that can be done for our military veterans. For further details, or to RSVP, contact Diane Layton, FPA of Florida Executive Director, or Ashley O’Kurley, FPA of Miami Director of Advocacy.
FPA of Florida Advocacy Results in “Unaffiliated Insurance Agent” Law
The FPA of Florida was instrumental in advocating on behalf of legislation permitting those without any affiliation to one or more insurance companies to now be eligible to earn a State of Florida insurance license without needing an insurance company to appoint them. Effective July 1, 2014, this legislation permits financial planners and advisors wishing to render fee-for-service advice relating to insurance products to legally do so by obtaining the new “unaffiliated insurance agent” license. This accomplishment was the result of a multiyear advocacy effort by the FPA of Florida, which should help stem the tide of consumers receiving insurance-related recommendations and advice from those who were heretofore unqualified and/or unlicensed to do so.
FPA of Florida
The FPA of Florida includes all nine FPA Chapters in Florida and serves as the leading advocacy organization in promoting the financial planning profession, and engages with members, consumers, regulators, legislators and other stakeholders in promoting the principles of financial planning as the means by which consumers’ need for financial services are addressed with the highest levels of competence and professionalism. The FPA of Florida visits Tallahassee twice each year to give voice to these important issues. Please feel free to contact your FPA of Miami Representative Ashley O’Kurley, CFP®, at firstname.lastname@example.org to share your ideas and get involved with the FPA of Florida.
